What do all those letters and numbers mean?
The numbers on your eyeglass prescription reflect your visual needs, your refractive error, and how the eyeglass lenses should be cut.
Typically, you'll see the following abbreviations:

The most basic ones you will encounter:

Α.Ο.= Left Eye

CYL= O Cylinder or Cylinder (CYL) in conjunction with Axis (AXE) indicates the power of your lens to correct astigmatism. If this column is empty, it means you do not have astigmatism.
AXE= O Axis or Axis (AXE) indicates the angle of the lens, with which the Cylinder (CYL) placed to correct astigmatism.
DP= H Visual Distance (DP) is the distance between the two daughters. A must-have feature so your glasses manufacturer knows where to place the optical center on each lens so you can see with the greatest sharpness and clarity.
The rarest ones you will encounter:

How often should an eye exam be performed?
The eye examination should be performed approximately every 2 years.
Children should have their first eye exam when they are about six months old, and then another just before they start school. This ensures that they can see clearly in the classroom. Poor eyesight can seriously affect a child's learning.
